The fall-out from the collapse of Chrysler and its re-emergence under Fiat will be widespread. Weeny European hatchbacks will find their way into US showrooms. Union power will be neutralised as an Italian bloke, who will wear a blue round-neck pullover to even the poshest events, takes full control of the company that, get this, once owned Lamborghini. But what about Bristol?

It’s easy to sit here in the UK and observe the travails of what was once the world’s largest car manufacturer with a sense of comfortable detachment. Yes, there are several thousands of UK jobs at risk, and we hope that the Magna deal will allow Ellesmere and Luton to continue producing vehicles.
